What is PCB Testing

Posted:03:28 PM August 16, 2023 writer: Nextpcb

PCB Testing is an essential and critical step in the manufacturing process of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). Its primary objective is to ensure that the PCBs meet the required standards of quality and functionality. In this article we will introduce common testing methods in the PCB industry, such as Manual Visual Inspection, Flying Probe testing, Fixture testing, and AOI testing. Additionally, we will also discuss new high-tech testing methods that have emerged with the development of electronic products.

Manual Visual Inspection (MVI)

The operator uses a magnifying glass or calibrated microscope to visually inspect the board to determine if it is qualified. This is the most traditional method of inspection. Currently, this method is becoming less and less applicable due to the increase in PCB production and the smaller wire spacing and component size on PCBs.

  • Advantages: low cost, don't need fixture
  • Disadvantage: subjective human error, high long-term costs, defect detection discontinuity and data collection difficulties

Flying Probe Testing

Flying probe test is a test method based on mechanical contact, which uses multiple small needles to test points on a PCB. When the needle of flying probe tester contacts the connection point on the PCB, it will test its electrical function.

  • Advantage : fast, applicable for mass production
  • Disadvantage: only test a single point and cannot test the electrical function of the whole PCB.

Fixture Testing

Unlike the flying probe test, fixture test is based on the mechanical contact , which uses a fixture to test the electrical performance of the whole PCB.

  • Advantages: accurate test results, applicable to different kinds of PCBs
  • Disadvantages: high cost, requires specializing test equipment and software

AOI Testing

Automated optical inspection is a method that utilizes optical imaging, specifically a high-resolution camera, to detect defects and errors on PCBs.

  • Advantage: high speed, inspect multiple points and areas on the PCB.
  • Disadvantages:  may exist false reports and omissions in the test results.

Addition to the above testing methods, there are some new PCB Testing techniques. Two of them will be introduced below:

Non-Contact Electronic Testing

Non-Contact Electronic Testing a test method based on radio waves, it can test the electrical performance of the PCB without any contact with the PCB.

  • Advantage: quickly test complex circuits and high-density components on PCBs, suitable for mass production and high-speed board testing
  • Disadvantages: high cost

Infrared Imaging Testing

Infrared Imaging Testing is based on infrared imaging technology, which can detect hot spots and temperature anomalies on PCBs.

  • Advantage: quickly locate faults on the PCB, suitable high power and high temperature application scenarios
  • Disadvantages:high cost

In the future, PCB Testing will tend to be automated, intelligent and use more advanced testing methods. With the development of technology, non-destructive testing technology and artificial intelligence will be widely used in PCB Testing. Refined testing, reliability analysis and fault prediction will become key in the research field. With constant innovation and improvement, PCB Testing will provide a higher level of performance and reliability assurance for electronic products.
